February 2024

logoWell, here we are at the end of February and it’s still looking mildly green around the place. Luckily, we got a bit of a break in the weather and things dried up enough to see some hay getting done, unfortunately a bit of it went passed its used by date.

There doesn’t seem to be a shortage of feed around, and with maize about to kick off we will have plenty to carry us through now that things are starting to dry up.

Right now, the Northland Field Days are in full swing, so we are excited to hear how Murray and the team get on up there, it's always a great opportunity to catch up with everyone.

In a couple of weeks, we have the Central Districts Field Days in Fielding, and the boys have a site down there for our Reiter Mergers which will be good fun. If you haven’t been to CD it’s a great show with an awesome vibe so if you are keen for a day, out come and say hi.

You may have heard our radio ads reminding you to give all the feedout gear a good look over before you really need it, there’s nothing worse than finding out the bale feeders knackered and its too late! If you need parts, service work or a new bit of gear just give us a call.

SAFER, FASTER, STRONGER

BA Pumps & Sprayers (formerly known as Bertolini Australasia) are a proper kiwi company that has been developing its own products to suit our needs since 1989. Their brand-new LM Series sprayer and ‘M’ boom really show off the capabilities of this forward-thinking team and its desire to provide the best sprayer in the business.

When I took a look at the new LM sprayer my first thought was that this looks like a sprayer designed for farmers, BUT it has a whole lot of contractor flavor in there. The general layout, the standard features and the overall engineering quality instantly appeared to be better than what we are used to seeing in this size and price range.

When BA set out to design the new tank and boom, their mindset was on improving the overall efficiency, productivity of the sprayer as well as the safety of the operator. We all know these days health and safety are an ever-present factor in our daily farming lives and like it or not, has to be a consideration. And to the previous criteria, well, time is money especially on farm!

The new LM comes in two sizes, the 900L and the 1150L. The tank itself has been very well thought out. Its shape puts the bulk of the weight forward, close to the tractor for stability and the face of the tank has minimal areas for mud and debris to settle. Climbing up to access the tank lids is easy with plenty of hand holds and solid points to stick your gummies. It may seem like a small thing, but I vividly recall the number of scalped shins I’ve had from being unbalanced on the top of a sprayer.

The placement of key components across the machine has also been very well thought out. The pressure gauge and tank level indicator are clearly visible from the tractor, you don’t need to be a contortionist to get to the tap on the hand wash tank. The built in induction hopper is very neatly incorporated rather than being a bolt on addition, both of these items coming standard on the LM by the way.

The frame itself is very nicely put together too, one thing I noticed is the quality of the galvanizing. As with many things, there’s levels to this game and just because something is galvanized doesn’t mean it’s now bullet-proof, the quality of the job done on the LM frame, as with all BA sprayers is top notch and corrosion won’t be an issue, even for customers at our Sulphur city Rotorua branch!

Now to the boom, the ‘M’ boom that is, it certainly is a nice tidy unit when folded or unfolded and it’s not hard to work out how it got its name. I think one thing that is an ongoing concern for anyone that owns a sprayer with a fair size boom is ‘how often am I going to need to get the welder out to stitch it back together?’ Well, I think BA have done everything they can to minimize this concern with some very neat little features.

Firstly, built in skid plates at the center pivot of the boom help protect the arms in rough terrain where a sudden sway of the tractor can lead to disaster with a lesser boom, simple but very effective! It also has built in mechanical breakaways with self-return to save you having to leave the comfort of your cab. And lastly, in the war against bent booms, the outer arms are also smooth with little to no catch points in case you do come into contact with terrafirma or pesky fences.

Available in 10m and 12m variations the ‘M’ boom is going to tick all the boxes for the bulk of our customers and will make a nice manageable upgrade from the numerous 8m booms we see out and about.

There’s a heap more options and features to chat about with the new LM sprayer and M boom, but we can get into the nitty gritty when you pop in to see one for yourself. Overall, we are big fans of this new sprayer offering from BA and that’s why we have signed up as one of the exclusive dealers for this sweet piece of kit.

So, next time you’re in the neighborhood pop in and have a nosey, stock will be landing soon…. That’s assuming we don’t sell them straight away!
